Learning Objectives

This on demand training provides a comprehensive overview of relevant research literature on birth trauma and offers assessment and history taking recommendations when working with birth trauma survivors. This training is designed for psychotherapists, but all perinatal providers are welcome!

  • Understand experiential themes of birth trauma

  • Identify risk factors, immediate, and long term sequelae of birth trauma

  • Learn about experiences of birth trauma in historically marginalized groups (e.g., members of BIPOC and transgender-identifying groups)

  • Identify history taking recommendations for birth trauma survivors presenting for psychotherapy or counseling

  • Learn assessment tools that can be administered during the initial phases of psychotherapy with birth trauma survivors (including the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale, PTSD Checklist for DSM-5, Dissociative Experiences Scale)

Psychologist

Dr. Alpern is a licensed clinical psychologist, an EMDRIA-approved EMDR therapist, and an EMDRIA-approved consultant. She is the founder and director of Center Psychology Group in New York City, a psychotherapy practice that specializes in treating trauma within the adult and perinatal populations. Outside of her clinical practice, Dr. Alpern creates mental health content providing psychoeducation and raising awareness about EMDR and trauma-informed psychotherapy on her Instagram and TikTok platforms.
