Learning Objectives

This training teaches participants how to assess clients for EMDR readiness and covers best practices for resourcing/stabilization. Part 1 teaches participants how to evaluate client stability, integrative capacity, affect tolerance/regulation, and dissociation. Part 2 highlights best practices for resourcing/stabilization, including: 1) working within the Window of Tolerance; 2) teaching adaptive coping for nervous system dysregulation; 3) increasing emotional and somatic literacy; and 4) strengthening dual awareness.

  • Understand the Window of Tolerance, including how clinicians can use this theoretical framework to assess EMDR readiness

  • Identify three patient factors that contribute to EMDR readiness

  • List three ways to assess for dissociation during Phase 1 to determine readiness

  • Understand how Safe/Calm Place can serve as a diagnostic tool/predictor of EMDR readiness

  • Understand how to incorporate psychoeducation about the neurobiology of trauma into the clinical dialog.

  • Learn stabilization interventions to help clients regulate both hyper and hypo-aroused states of nervous system dysregulation.

  • Understand the conceptual importance of emotional/somatic literacy, and how to help clients enhance this skill.

  • Demonstrate understanding of interventions that help clients practice and enhance capacity for dual awareness.
