Learning Objectives

In EMDR therapy, blocked processing occurs when the natural progression of adaptive memory reprocessing halts. This workshop introduces an organized framework for identifying and resolving three key contributors to blocked processing: (1) primary target issues, (2) ancillary target issues (e.g., feeder memories) and (3) blocking beliefs. Participants will be introduced to strategies to explore somatic channels, shift affective states, and integrate interweaves when spontaneous processing stalls. Emphasis will be placed on collaborative assessment and adaptations to the standard protocol while maintaining fidelity to EMDR’s theoretical model. Clinicians will leave better equipped to maintain therapeutic momentum even when clients feel stuck.

  • Define blocked processing in the context of EMDR Phases 4 and 5.

  • Identify and address at least 3 types of primary target issues that contribute to blocked processing.

  • Explain the role of ancillary targets such as feeder memories in blocking reprocessing and demonstrate 2 strategies to explore them.

  • Describe how to assess and resolve blocking beliefs.

  • Apply 3 types of cognitive interweaves based on informational plateaus to support clients experiencing looping or stalled reprocessing.
