Learning Objectives

Birth trauma is a major risk factor for perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs), with implications for both parent and infant health. This training combines three core areas: an overview of birth trauma and relevant assessments, key techniques for resourcing and stabilization, and the EMDR Recent Birth Trauma Protocol. Participants will learn theoretical frameworks and actionable interventions grounded in EMDR’s Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model and current research. The training integrates case studies, experiential exercises, and evidence-based tools to build clinician skill in this area.

  • Identify experiential themes and risk factors of birth trauma, including implications for historically marginalized groups.

  • Learn history taking and assessment recommendations for birth trauma survivors.

  • Understand the Window of Tolerance, including how to teach this concept to clients.

  • Understand emotional/somatic literacy and its clinical relevance.

  • Identify somatic and relational resourcing techniques to support stabilization.

  • Demonstrate understanding of dual awareness and relevant interventions (e.g., CIPOS, Flashback Halting Protocol).

  • Conceptualize birth trauma using the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model.

  • Understand the efficacy of EMDR within the perinatal population.

  • Learn and apply the EMDR Recent Birth Trauma Protocol.
