Learning Objectives

This training covers integral principles of somatic resourcing and teaches participants somatic interventions to incorporate into the preparation phase of EMDR. Participants will learn about the historical context and basic principles of somatic psychotherapy. Dr. Alpern will provide an overview of the three sensory feedback systems (exteroception, interoception, proprioception) that inform an embodied approach to somatic resourcing. Participants will learn bottom-up interventions to deepen somatic awareness, strengthen dual awareness, and enhance self-regulation to best prepare their clients for trauma processing. This training emphasizes a mindful, regulation-focused, and titrated approach to resourcing. Participants will come away equipped with deeper knowledge and clinical tools to integrate into their EMDR practice and best prepare their clients for trauma processing.

  • Identify the basic principles of somatic psychotherapy and how these principles can be applied to the preparation phase of EMDR.

  • Understand the conceptual importance of somatic literacy and how to help clients enhance this skill.

  • Describe the three sensory feedback systems that inform an embodied approach to somatic resourcing (exteroception, interoception, proprioception).

  • Demonstrate understanding of somatic interventions to facilitate regulation in clients (e.g., pendulation, holds, voo breathing).

  • Demonstrate understanding of interventions that help clients practice and enhance capacity for dual awareness (including Flashback Halting Protocol).
